Tips for Birding

This is a premier California State Park centered on spectacular redwood groves along the Big Sur River. The park has campgrounds plus the Big Sur Inn, picnic areas, a small nature center (in season), and many lovely trails, including a loop trail to Pfeiffer Falls (in season; in drought years the falls may be dry). This State Park is very popular on weekends and in summer.

Birds of Interest

Resident birds of Redwood forest, live-oak-covered hills, and chaparral are ubiquitous within the park. You can't miss Steller's Jays but it will take luck to see a California Condor overhead. American Dipper frequents the Big Sur River, but water levels will determine if it is in the Park, or upstream or downstream. Pacific Wren patchily inhabits ferny understory but tends to be quite secretive. In summer, watch for Purple Martin overhead. In winter, look  and listen for Varied Thrush, Golden-crowned Kinglet, and Red-breasted Sapsucker.

About this Location

The borders of this Hotspot closely follow the boundaries of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, with a few minor inclusions or exclusions (see adjacent map; red lines are Hotspot borders). There are two sub-locations embedded within this Hotspot: (a) the Highway 1 bridge over the Big Sur River (purple borders; most often used by local birders to check of American Dipper enroute to other Big Sur regional sites), and (b) a larger sub-location for the Buzzards Roost Trail (orange borders), a sometimes strenuous 3-mile loop that is entirely west of Highway One. If you are birding only within one of those sub-locations, please use them to more precisely map your observations. If you are birding those areas while covering most of the park — all of which is otherwise east of Highway 1 — then it is fine to include the sub-locations within your general eBird checklist of the Park.
