Pengelly Landing, Ontario

Tips for Birding

This is primarily a spot to scan Rice Lake for waterbirds. A scope is highly recommended, as rafts of waterfowl are often well offshore.

Birds of Interest

Waterbirds are the main attraction. Particularly in late fall, 1000s of ducks and geese congregate offshore. Redhead, both scaup species, Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead and Common and Hooded mergansers gather in large mixed-species rafts, along with loons and grebes.

In late fall Bonaparte's Gulls forage over the lake, often in significant numbers. Other interesting species can be intermixed with these flocks, including Little Gull and Forster's Tern (Peterborough County's first and only record occurred here on 1 November 2019).

A breeding colony of around 100 Double-crested Cormorant is visible on West Grape Island, around 2.5 km to the east-southeast.

Migrant landbirds are often attracted to the hordes of midges with collect in the willows along the shore. Blue-gray Gnatcatcher has been observed on a number of occasions, as has Orchard Oriole.

About this Location

The main attraction here is the right-of-way that extends to a view of Rice Lake. The right-of-way is owned by the township and is the southern extension of Scriven Road.

You can park on the side of Scriven or Hannah roads, just be sure not to block any driveways or the right-of-way itself and be sure to pull as far onto the shoulder as possible. DO NOT PARK in the right-of-way.
