Packery Channel Oak Motte Sanctuary area

Tips for Birding

The most productive area of the sanctuary is close to the entrance at the intersection of Villa Marie Isabel and Sand Dollar Rd. There is a large, dense grove of oaks right at this corner that is quite often loaded with birds. Check the wires here for flycatchers, warblers, and buntings. The boardwalk begins at the entrance of the sanctuary and the first covered pavilion has great views of water drips as well as a feeding station with oranges that attract multiple oriole species. Continuing down the boardwalk offers further views of additional water drips as well as Leah's Pond, where wading birds and ducks may sometimes be. The boardwalk ends at the second covered pavilion, but follow the sandy trail around the vegetated mound to find two additional sets of stairs. Both provide new viewpoints of the sanctuary from a higher perspective, with oak canopies at eye level where warblers and vireos can be seen at point-blank.

Walking along Sand Dollar Rd. can also be fruitful, with some houses having seed and fruit feeders that attract migrants like Buntings, Orioles, and Grosbeaks.

Birds of Interest

About this Location

The Packery Channel Oak Motte Sanctuary is owned and maintained by the Audubon Outdoor Club of Corpus Christi, LLC, which purchased the property behind Sand Dollar Rd. to preserve the oak motte that attracts incredible numbers of neotropical migrants arriving from the Gulf of Mexico in the spring.

The Packery Channel Sanctuary is tucked into a neighborhood on North Padre Island known as the Packery Woodlands. The only significant remaining stand of trees along the 113 miles stretch of Padre Island coastal lands, this sanctuary provides a critical stopover for neotropical migrants. This patch of woods is one of the first blocks of suitable habitat that songbirds find after arriving from the Gulf, and it provides food and freshwater.

Migrating birds find refuge among the dense stand of Live Oak trees, nearby grasslands, and freshwater and marine habitats.

The Oak Motte Sanctuary has a freshwater pond at the entrance of the sanctuary and a short boardwalk that has two covered pavilions with views of water drips and feeders. Sandy trails lead to two sets of wooden stairs that climb an old dune that overlooks the sanctuary, flanked by oak tree canopies at eye level.

There is no parking lot, but vehicles can be parked on the shoulder along Villa Marie Isabel, where the sanctuary entrance is.
