Tips for Birding

Entrance fee is cash only, Credit and Debit cards are not accepted.

The best location in the park is the Climbers Pavilion/Interpretive Loop. Most of the birds of interest can be found in this area including Black-throated Sparrow, Verdin, and Canyon Wren. Also check around the parking lot as Canyon Towhees are usually found hopping around the parked cars. Another great location that usually has less visitors walking around would be the Turkey Loop Trail. A section of this trail parallels Pogue Canyon and is a great spot to listen for Golden-cheeked Warblers from March-July.

Birds of Interest

Birds of interest found year-round include Verdin, Black-throated Sparrow, Rufous-crowned Sparrow, Canyon Towhee, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Golden-fronted Woodpecker, and Canyon Wren. In the summer Painted Buntings are numerous, other birds of interest include Vermilion Flycatcher, Ash-throated Flycatcher and Bell’s Vireo. The park also has a small population of Golden-cheeked warblers and Black-capped Vireos. The winter is the best time to bird this park which is known for its sparrow diversity and rarities that show up during this time. Rare sightings include Mountain Bluebird, Brewer’s Sparrow, Pyrrhuloxia, Lark Bunting, Red-naped Sapsucker, and Green-tailed Towhee.
