About this Location

The entire 29-mile Selinde Roosenburg Memorial Backpack Trail loop is marked by orange blazes and side trails with white blazes. Main trailhead parking is at Hope Schoolhouse at Wheelabout Road which starts a 1.7 mile connector to the main loop. There is also parking at Iron Furnace on Route 278. The trail crosses state Routes 278 and 56 at multiple locations, as well as local and service roads; see the map for the various shorter segments between these points. According to the ODNR website, the trail requires moderate levels of skill and endurance, be cautious of venomous snakes, and stream crossings may be impassable following a storm. Zaleski State Forest is a public hunting area, so birders should be aware of hunting seasons and are encouraged to wear bright orange-colored clothing when hiking.

A self-registration permit (no fee) is required of all hikers, to be filled out prior to entering the trail, and available on the trail parking area 24 hours a day at points A and N. Place the completed permit in the registration box provided and carry the stub on the trail.
