Mill Pond, Shrewsbury

Mill Pond, Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury, Massachusetts 01545

About this Location

While referred to as a pond, Mill Pond no longer serves its original purpose. Historical records indicate the mill pond no longer existed by 1870 and was replaced by a swamp.  Despite this, the name has stuck and the area is still referred to as Mill Pond.

The pond is off Old Mill Pond Road. Fishing is permitted but swimming and wading are prohibited.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Mill Pond is a small, unnamed island located within the waterbody. This 40x40-foot island has been unofficially dubbed "Busta Rhymes Island" by a resident who began caring for the island over a decade ago and thought the name fit the island's character, citing "rope-swinging, blueberries, and...stuff Busta would enjoy".  While the name isn't official, it has been picked up by media outlets and added a touch of whimsy to the history of Mill Pond.
