Tips for Birding

Drive along the county road, stopping every so often when the habitat changes. Stopping at the pond is recommended, as many songbirds and waterfowl can be found here.

Birds of Interest

Waterfowl including wintering geese, whistling-ducks, and wintering ducks can be found on the pond near the bed and breakfast. This spot here can also have both Inca and Common Ground Dove, Bullock's and Baltimore Orioles, Couch's Kingbirds, and other edge songbirds. Pipits and Wilson's Snipe can be seen at the flooded yard down the hill. Pauraque and Barred Owl can be seen in the densest portion of the road and Hermit Thrush and Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers are here too. Buntings and Pyrrhuloxia are not uncommon in the shrubby old field sections. Where the forest opens up to pasture up the hill, sparrows (Lark, Savannah, Clay-colored, Vesper) and both meadowlark species can be found here. Wild Turkey can be seen or heard throughout the region. Listen for Verdin (scarce) and Cassin's Sparrow.

About this Location

Knolle Farm & Ranch is a ranch near Sandia with its main headquarters located at the corner of FM70 and CR103 where its Bed and Breakfast facility is. Birders are welcome to bird from the public county road adjacent to the ranch, where a pond hosts waterfowl. CR103 eventually reaches the Jim Wells County line, where it becomes CR360. The habitat here starts as pasture, pond, and flooded fields. As the road extends down the hill, the trees become more dense and more mature until they open up completely up the hill at the county line. The rest of the road is predominantly pasture or brushy old field.
