Tips for Birding

When submitting eBird observations at Mount Washington, it is most helpful to start a new checklist for each hotspot on the mountain. Use the general hotspot when you have a checklist that includes multiple locations or if no other hotspot or personal location is appropriate for your sightings.

About this Location

Mount Washington State Park, a 60.3-acre parcel perched on the summit of the Northeast’s highest peak, is surrounded by the extensive 750,000-acre White Mountain National Forest. On a clear day, views from the 6,288-foot summit extend beyond New Hampshire as far as 130 miles to Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, Maine, Quebec, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Mount Washington in New Hampshire is the highest peak in the Northeastern United States. It has an elevation of 6,288 feet and is part of the Presidential Range of the White Mountains. Mount Washington is known for its extreme weather and holds the record for the highest wind speed ever recorded on Earth, 231 miles per hour, in 1934. The mountain attracts many visitors who can reach the summit by hiking, driving, or riding a cog railway. Mount Washington also has a museum, an observatory, and a library that offers educational programs and resources about the mountain and its climate.
