San Joaquin Experimental Range (restricted access)

Tips for Birding

The range is run by the USDA/National Forest Service and was closed to unauthorized people for decades but recently the administration had the no trespassing signs taken down from the fences along Hwy 41. Researchers have projects going all over the ranch throughout the year and cattle grazing rights are leased by a neighboring rancher.

Birds of Interest

The best place in Madera county to find a gray flycatcher during the last 10 days of April.

About this Location

The range has an electronic gate that people with permission have the combo to. All others have to park along Hwy 41 somewhere and hop the fence which is legal now. There may be hunters during spring turkey season and quail hunters in late October through January at times.
