Tips for Birding

Birdwatching in Vermont, p. 38

Ducks and geese can be fairly close to the Causeway, but the flocks are sometimes quite distant. In any case, a scope is almost always necessary for optimal observation of the birds.

About this Location

The Island Line Trail begins at the south tip of South Hero Island and crosses Lake Champlain toward Burlington. There is a bike ferry on the causeway near the Grand Isle-Chittenden county line.

Follow Martin Road to the Island Line Trail. There’s a small parking lot immediately on the left, with a walk of less than a mile to the Causeway. There’s another parking area at the end of the trail. Look for the Vermont Fish and Game sign at the trailhead. A small parking area and kiosk are on the left just as you enter the Island Line Trail. It's an easy walk from there of about a half mile to get to the Causeway.

You can also drive along this road, which ends at an ample parking area. Technically this parking area is reserved for anglers (there are signs). You can bird from the parking area or you can walk along the Causeway where there are plenty of open areas for scanning the lake or the bay. The Causeway ends at "the Cut" where there is a cement platform used by birders and anglers alike. The Colchester Causeway ends across from the Cut, but access to that is from the Colchester side.
