Tips for Birding

Birding is best from dawn through mid-morning and to a lesser extent again in late afternoon and evening. Park your vehicle at the roadside, so as not to impede local traffic and either stand or bring an lawn chair and sit and watch for overflying birds. This location is exposed and often windswept and consequently can be bitterly cold in the winter and during the shoulder seasons, so dress appropriately.

Birds of Interest

Of most interest are the migrant non-passerines, notably raptors, waterfowl and shorebirds. Viewing of migrant raptors is best in fall between mid-September and mid-November as southbound migrants are headed west along the north shore of Rice Lake. In spring, northbound migrants may be viewed in March and April. Overwintering raptors have included Short-eared and Snowy owls, Red-tailed and Rough-legged hawks, Northern Harrier and American Kestrel. Flocks of overflying waterfowl in transit between Lake Ontario, Rice Lake, the Kawartha Lakes and beyond is best in spring. A variety of waterfowl species is possible including, particularly geese and swans. In late May watch for overflying flocks of migrant shorebirds. Flocks of Black-bellied Plover have been observed and Whimbrel and other arctic and subarctic-breeding shorebirds are possible. The hayfields to the east of Scriven Road and immediately south of CR 2 can be good for overwintering flocks of Snow Buntings and redpolls and on occasion both Lapland Longspur and Hoary Redpoll. In summer the fields host breeding Eastern Meadowlark, Bobolink, Horned Lark and, rarely, Sedge Wren.
