Tips for Birding

Please DO NOT drive or go into the area around the owner's house and buildings on the east side of the highway. Stay clear of all farm equipment that is on the property.

It is okay to park along the lane near the south end of the lake. This is near a dangerous, blind curve in the road, so please be careful here. It is best to park within the first 100' or so after turning into the lane and view from this area. Driving farther along the lane will flush the birds from the south end of the lake. Do not block this lane! This is a working farm and the lane and two-track are used by the landowners.

Please DO NOT step onto the property west of the highway, this includes the area near the culvert. This property belongs to a different owner who is adamant about people not going onto his property.

Please DO NOT stop along the highway or otherwise impede traffic. Please keep all of these considerations in mind. The greatly increased traffic in the county the past several years along with the increased number of birders makes this area even more sensitive.

To best appreciate this location, you will need a spotting scope, as the lake can be fairly large and many birds will be distant. It's also wise to start off with muck boots, especially if you want to walk around the lake itself. Neither of these are required, but you'll see a lot more with the magnification a scope provides, and being able to move around for better views that the boots will facilitate.

About this Location

This is an intermittent lake on private land. It's important to follow the guidelines above, to preserve our continued access to the property. There are local birders who monitor this hotspot, as much of the year it's nonexistent, for lack of water. But when there is water, it's great for shorebirds and waterfowl.

Notable Trails

The parking lane mentioned above continues along one edge of the lake as a two-track farm road. It is possible to walk all the way around the lake, but it is vital that you do not walk on any crops. You will need muck boots for this walk. Bring water and take precautions with your optical gear in case you fall in the mud.
