Tips for Birding

First you must register and pay entrance fee at the head quarters building in the main Davis Mountains State Park entrance, There tell them you want to got to the Primitive area. They will ask you to sign in and then give you the combination to enter the gate. You will need to come back and sign out once you've concluded your Primitive Area birding. If you are in a group with more than 2 cars, there probably won't be enough room to park more than 2 cars by the gate, while someone is opening it. Once inside proceed around the bend to the left for parking. Equestrian trailers go to the right.

This location can be good especially in wet years when Limpia Creek will have water in it. Migrants and winter birds will sometimes show up here and not in the main State Park area. A small loop down Seep Trail which crosses Limpia Creek and meets up with Limpia Creek Trail where you can return to the parking area. The total loop is approximately 2 miles. Continuing up Limpia Creek Trail is another sub-Hotspot. To the right (east) of the parking area, the State Park property continues for awhile. There is no established trail in this area, but you can bird at your own risk. Walking down the creek can be tricky but possible with a combination of following animal trails and walking Limpia Creek along the rocks. Approximately 0.9 miles is a spring feeding into the creek. There is water here even in the dry years. A great spot if you can get to it. Big cottonwoods, and hackberries between the creek and TX-118. A Fox Sparrow has showed up in this area a few winters, plus Winter Wren and Hermit Thrush. At the parking area, especially in winter listen for Phainopepla, a usually good location for this sometime elusive species.
