About this Location

in 1979, Au Sable Trails Camp for Youth officially became known as the Au Sable Institute. The transition from camp to an educational institution involved a major shift in the facility's operations and management. The founders realized that they would need a dynamic leader to guide the new Institute forward and build its reputation within the academic community. Dr. Cal DeWitt often referred to as the modern-day father of Christian environmentalism was asked to take on the role of Executive Director of the Institute and led the organization for 25 years.

Today, Au Sable is a highly-regarded educational organization that provides a wide variety of environmental science courses each year to students from nearly 60 participating Christian colleges, with classes in northern lower Michigan, Washington state, India, and Costa Rica. Au Sable is a valued resource for educating and inspiring future leaders in Christian environmental science to make a difference in the world.

The Great Lakes campus is located on beautiful Big Twin Lake. The campus includes miles of hiking on 120 acres of property, 300 feet of waterfront for canoeing, kayaking, and swimming, recreation fields, and lots of shady places to hang up a hammock to study and relax.
