Tips for Birding

The platform affords a panoramic view, but is highly visible, so move slowly and quietly so as not to spook the wildlife.

Birds of Interest

Birders can expect to see Trumpeter Swan, Canada Geese, Mallard, Wood Duck, migrant waterfowl, herons, Bald Eagle, Red-shouldered Hawk, woodpeckers, Marsh Wren, Swamp Sparrow, Song Sparrow, and Common Yellowthroat. Other likely species include Sandhill Crane, American Bittern, Least Bittern, Common Gallinule, Wilson's Snipe, and migrant warblers. Heron nests in some of the snags provide evidence that a rookery was here. It is uncertain if it is still active.

About this Location

Troy Wetlands, the newest Geauga Park District park, opened on Thanksgiving Day 2023. It is located along SR 700 south of 422. The nearest cross street is Hoover Rd. Some birders will recall that this wetland area was partially visible from Hoover Rd. The property was acquired by the park district in 2003. Most of the property, 65%, is considered to be wetland while the rest is forested. The habitat is predominantly marsh wetlands and surrounding this are brushy transitional zones that turn into swamp forest along with a small amount of upland forest. This 60-acre park is unique to Geauga County because its waters flow into the Mahoning River, which is part of the Ohio River watershed while the majority of the waterways in the county are part of the Lake Erie watershed. The park includes a raised observation platform that gives birders a spectacular view of the marsh, a short trail which includes a boardwalk loop through the marsh, a picnic table, and a fishing platform.

Notable Trails

Two short trails give birders access to the marsh. The 0.10-mile Marsh Overlook Trail is a flat trail heading south that ends at the marsh overlook platform. North from the parking lot is the 0.25-mile Treefrog Trail, a loop trail that goes past a fishing platform and includes a section of boardwalk.
