Winona Pond covers an area of about 40 acres and is surrounded by a wooded park with trails, picnic areas, and playgrounds. The pond is also a historical site, as it was the location of the first ironworks in America, established by John Winthrop Jr. in 1643. The pond was named after his daughter, Winona, who died at a young age. Today, Winona Pond preserves the natural beauty and heritage of Peabody and is a water supply for the city.
