About this Location

Bill Evans Lake is a 62-acre lake situated between Cliff and Silver City in the Gila area. The total acreage of the wildlife area is 300 acres.

Bill Evans Lake was purchased in 1972 from the Phelps-Dodge Corporation. Situated on top of a mesa, this small property provides fishing access and habitats for wildlife. The reservoir is located 300 feet above the Gila River. Water is routinely pumped from the river below to maintain lake levels and suitable habitats for warm and cold-water fish.

The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish has installed a new boat ramp and fishing access points, as well as improved road access on the north side of the lake. The old boat ramp has been modified to provide better access for non-motorized watercraft, and several fishing jetties were also added.

Wildlife viewers, photographers, hikers, bicyclists, horseback riders, and campers must have a valid license or permit.
