Springer Lake is a privately owned reservoir fed by the Cimarron River. Under an agreement with the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, access to the 450-acre lake is via the dam road on the east side of the lake. Parking is to the north and south, with vault toilets. The lake provides a good stopover for shorebirds during migration. Interesting duck and grebe species can be found during winter.
The lake is about 5 miles northwest of Springer via NM-468 and C-17. From downtown Springer, go north on Railroad Avenue for 0.3 miles, and turn left on NM-468. Follow the paved highway and continue onto the dirt road C-17.
There is a boat ramp said to be in poor condition.
