About this Location

The relevant Audubon Important Bird Area page does a good job of describing the hotspot, noting it is on private land. But some confusion regarding current access is understandable, given that Audubon page is undated and goes on to state:  "While the north grove is not fenced, gated, or posted, the narrows and south grove are fenced and have clearly been posted."  The signage was evidently posted in 2012.

The eBird name of the hotspot includes the parenthetical "historical, currently not accessible" notice. Yet, there are detailed eBird lists submitted every year, through 2022.  In January, 2023, the hotspot appeared (from mile marker 7 on NM-480, directly north of the eBird map pin) to be unfenced, with no signage posted. So, is any part of the hotspot open to birders?  Since 2012, the few lists submitted each year (generally, at the height of migration) have been by individuals associated with such organizations as the Museum of Southwestern Biology and probably having permission of the landowner. It would be prudent for birders to assume that the Audubon page information about the hotspot being on private land is still current, and to take the eBird hotspot name to mean "not accessible without permission".
