Blynman Canal

Blynman Canal

Gloucester, Massachusetts 01930

About this Location

Blynman Canal, also known as the Annisquam River Cut, connects Gloucester Harbor with Ipswich Bay. It was first constructed in 1643 and later enlarged in 1829 and 1907. The canal allows boats to bypass the long and treacherous route around Cape Ann, saving time and fuel. The canal is spanned by the Blynman Bridge, a bascule bridge that opens frequently to let vessels pass. The bridge is locally known as the Cut Bridge, and its opening and closing can cause traffic delays on MA-127. The canal is named after Richard Blynman, a Puritan minister who led the first group of settlers to Gloucester in 1642.

Blynman Canal is located west of Gloucester High School. The canal can be viewed from the sidewalks of MA-133 and MA-127.
