About this Location

The A. Harlan Calef Isinglass Preserve is a 300-acre property in Barrington that protects a scenic stretch of the Isinglass River and its surrounding forests and wetlands. The preserve was donated to the Southeast Land Trust of New Hampshire by the Calef family in 2017, in honor of their father, a lifelong conservationist and outdoorsman. The preserve offers opportunities for hiking, fishing, wildlife viewing, and nature study, as well as protecting water quality and habitat for rare species. The preserve is open to the public from dawn to dusk, and visitors are asked to respect the natural and cultural resources of the land.

Parking is on an unnamed road 0.4 miles down Town Farm Road. Do not park on the roads, as this is access to private homes.

Notable Trails

An expanding set of trails is on the property, giving access to the Isinglass River, old cellar holes, stone walls, shagbark hickory trees, an old bridge abutment, an old cemetery, and Barrington’s Stonehenge.
