Cedar Grove Cemetery was established in 1854 and covers 53 acres of land. The cemetery is notable for its Gothic Revival chapel, designed by architect Gridley J. F. Bryant, and its landscaped grounds, featuring winding paths, ponds, and ornamental trees. The cemetery is the final resting place of many prominent citizens of Peabody and the surrounding area, including industrialists, politicians, veterans, and artists. Some of the notable interments include George Peabody, the philanthropist and namesake of the city; Francis Peabody, the founder of the Peabody Coal Company; and Elizabeth Whitman, the inspiration for the novel The Coquette by Hannah Webster Foster.
