Evenings can be excellent here in the summer when adult egrets and cormorants are returning to their nests or to roost.
Ducks, geese, gulls, cormorants, grebes, and more can be found on the water here. This is a rookery in the summer and nesting Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Cattle Egrets, Double-crested Cormorants, Neotropic Cormorants, and Black-crowned Night-herons can be seen. In the evenings, it is fun to watch the egrets, herons, cormorants, and ibis stream back in for the night. Hybrid Double-crested and Neotropic Cormorants can also be found. Mississippi Kites also nest in the area in the summer, too, and during the summer and migration, vultures and hawks can be seen moving through the western sky. Hybrid geese (in the winter) and rarities are fairly regularly found here. There is a resident population of domestic Graylag Geese.
The highlight of this park is the playa. It is generally birded from the east shore, but it's always a good idea to go over to the west shore as well to see what is on the west side of the island. Ducks, geese, and gulls tend to congregate in front of the parking lot because people feed them here.
