Tips for Birding

The Pennock Woods Park hotspot is outstanding during both migrations, when you can expect to find most of the songbird migrants you'd find down-creek at the Heinz Refuge, albeit in usually smaller numbers. It also features 2 notable residents, described below.

Pennock Woods Park is small, however the adjacent area may be birded within a 1 hour walk:
This adjacent area follows the Darby Creek north, then west as it parallels Scottdale Road.  It also includes a tiny local park known as Shrigley Park (you'll see the sign on Scottdale Road just past the Hilldale Road bridge) that has a tiny meadow and one short trail along a dry creek bed.

Birds of Interest

Pennock is one of the most reliable places in the area to see/hear both Barred Owl and Pileated Woodpecker. Both nest here and are generally active and vocal year-round (with the exception of nesting season when the owls are mostly silent).

The creek features Bald Eagles (year-round) and Ospreys (spring/summer), and Red-Shouldered Hawks nest along Scottdale Road. Screech Owls are common, and there have been quick visits from Saw-Whet Owls as well.

As mentioned above, both migrations are outstanding, with particularly high numbers of Scarlet Tanagers and Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks.  Warbler-wise, expect higher numbers of Black-Throated Blue, Chestnut-Sided, Parula, Magnolia, Ovenbird, Redstart, and Black-and-White; and less common but present are Tennessee, Canada, Palm, Pine, Black-Throated Green, Blue-Winged, Blackburnian, Cape May, Bay-Breasted, and Blackpoll.

Winter features Red-Breasted Nuthatch, Winter Wren, Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker, both Kinglets, and Common Raven.

Year round, common woodpecker species are found at the park. Belted kingfisher can be heard and seen along the creek. Many other common species will be found: American robin, American goldfinch, etc.

Finally, over the last few years, there have been some interesting and rare visitors:  Dickcissel, Yellow-Throated Warbler, and Black-Capped Chickadee.

About this Location

Enter Pennock Woods Park proper by parking on Pennock Terrace, and you'll see the well-marked park entrance on the right side of the street.

For the Scottdale Road/Darby Creek part of this hotspot, there is marked street parking on Scottdale Road right after you turn off of Lansdowne Avenue - park there and walk down the hill to meet up with the creek and the Shrigley Park area, though the birding gets good as soon as you hit Knoll Road.  Scottdale Road has a wide, clearly marked bike/walking lane, however keep an eye out for careless drivers.

Notable Trails

A trail goes through Pennock Park forming a loop, with a single path extending to the entrance. There are access points to the trail from some of the private properties adjacent to the park, so be mindful of the park's boundaries.
