Tips for Birding

The primary birding areas are the Chapel and Bird Sanctuary (directly past the chapel) and Lake Ransom Canyon.

Birds of Interest

This is another of the area's deeper and larger bodies of water. Winter is a good time to bird the lake and waterfowl, loons, mergansers, grebes, geese, cormorants, pelicans, heron, egrets, Belted Kingfishers, hawks, woodpeckers, juncos, sparrows, and kinglets can be found. In the summer the kites, flycatchers, kingbirds, orioles, swallows, vultures appear. Wrens, thrashers, towhees, owls, robins, finches, blackbirds, cardinals, and coots are a good bet year-round. Warblers and vireos can be found during migration. Despite its small size, the Bird Sanctuary can be quite productive and raccoons and foxes can occasionally be seen.

About this Location

This is a gated community, but there is no gate so access is permitted. The primary birding areas are the Chapel and Bird Sanctuary (directly past the chapel) and Lake Ransom Canyon. There is a stream and small pond that runs from the chapel to the south a little ways. The chapel has a small parking lot, but otherwise, there are very few places to pull over or park. There is a small gravel parking area just off of East Lakeshore Drive where it meets Island Drive just north of the Ranch House. The best views of the lake are from the southeastern edge around the dam. There is a small pull out at the corner of East Lakeshore Drive and South Lakeshore Drive (the last curve just west of the dam). The dam can occasionally be impassable due to water. Do not park on the dam or impede traffic on any of the roads. Please be courteous and do not look at anyone's yard or house with binoculars or scopes. It is best to only bird the more public areas.

Notable Trails

There is a small trail that leads into the Bird Sanctuary past the Chapel. The bricked trail to the chapel is no longer very even and there are steps along the way. Once you are past the chapel, the trial is dirt and loose rocks. It is narrow with plenty of cactus on either side, steep in places, and there are small tree limbs that you will need to duck under.
