Walk the Marsh Trail and check the trees around the parking lot, as well as the wooded areas and brushline NE of the reflecting pool. Follow Prairie Road SE out of the monument area for a driving loop with places to stop along the way.
With 312 species on record, this spot is active year-round. Several owl species, ducks, gulls, warblers, and migratory specialties are found regularly, as well as a fair share of rarities.
The San Jacinto Battleground is the top hotspot in Harris County. It is a State Historic Site with a variety of habitats, nature trails and plenty of parking. Access to the park is free. Restrooms are available in the monument, near the Headquarters and Battleship Texas site to the NW and near the Almonte capture site to the SE down Park Rd 1836.
The Marsh Trail which leads NE from the monument toward the bay is about .6 miles in length. There are numerous pull-outs along Prairie Road to safely get out of the car.
