Tips for Birding

Be sure to check out the large Eucalyptus located 1.8 miles in from the mouth of the canyon as this frequently has a large number of species flying in and out.

Year Round

  • Yellow-billed Magpie - typically located on the large flats around halfway down Reliz Canyon Road
  • California Condor - occasional flyovers
  • Golden Eagle - resident pair make frequent flyovers. Thought to nest in Vaquero Canyon to the west
  • Phainopepla
  • Rufous-crowned Sparrow

Winter

  • Cassin's Kingbird - has been showing up in recent years
  • Bell's Sparrow - rare/uncommon

Spring

  • Lazuli Bunting
  • Western Kingbird
  • Bullock's Oriole - frequently nests
  • Hooded Oriole
  • Ash-throated Flycatcher - frequently nests

About this Location

Reliz Canyon Road is a 6.3 mile dead end road that runs from the north to south in southern Monterey County. There are a decent number of places to pull over and get out of the car to bird. Mostly it is a bird-from-the-car adventure, as there is private property lining the entire road.
