Birds of Interest

This hotspot was established only in 2023, so eBird hotspot-specific data do not yet reflect the diversity, frequency, or abundance of species the birder may encounter here. However, based on observations at nearby Discovery Park, late winter and early spring should bring Plumbeous Vireo, while Phainopepla and Pyrrhuloxia might be observed throughout the year.

About this Location

Located in what is now the southeast edge of Safford, the city-owned cemetery is rather large for this portion of the US Southwest, covering about 50 acres and containing over 7,000 memorials. The cemetery established in the 1870's at the northwest end of the current Safford City Cemetery was called Layton Cemetery. As that cemetery grew toward the south and east, the name was changed to Safford Union Cemetery. During the middle of the 20th century, the cemetery came under the direction of the City of Safford;  the name was again changed and the cemetery now encompasses a much larger area than just the Layton and Safford Union sections. The cemetery is home to a memorial dedicated to the victims of the 1918 influenza pandemic, which claimed the lives of hundreds of residents.

A jogging path runs around the perimeter of the grounds, the southwest of which contain a small mesquite bosque. The cemetery itself is dotted with yucca and mesquite, as well as Italian cypress and other exotic trees.

Public restrooms are located near the cemetery entrance, but may be open on a limited basis.
