Tips for Birding

These ponds are not much to look at, but when nearby playas are dried out, they can hold a great variety of waterbirds for those interested in building their Floyd county list. Like many rural water treatment ponds, fencing is in place to prevent people from walking up to the water's edge. However, you can easily view two of the three ponds by turning south onto CR-101 (a dirt road) from Highway 70 and then taking a short dirt two-track on your right. This two-track leading up to the WTP gate is owned and maintained by the town of Lockney, and you can walk it or park at the end (provided it's not too muddy). Because you'll be facing the water from the east, morning to afternoon is the best time to go.

If rain has been plentiful, the playa along CR 101 can also be fruitful for ducks and shorebirds.

Birds of Interest

In April 2023, this spot became famous for hosting a Garganey. More generally, it can be good for shorebirds, grebes, swallows, Franklin's Gulls, and the more expected dabbling and diving ducks.
