Tips for Birding

The Blue River and forested areas are accessible from the Minor Park Tennis Courts and Shelter #1 entrance. The historic swales area includes scattered large trees and mowed areas as well as forest edge.

About this Location

Minor Park includes 235 acres managed by the Kansas City Department of Parks and Recreation south of Red Bridge Road. There are four entrances:

  • Minor Park Tennis Courts entrance (N38o55'6" W94o34'9") is on Blue River Road and provides access to restrooms, tennis courts, a radio-controlled flying area, and hiking-mountain bike trails that extend south through a bottomland hardwood forest as far as 139th Street. The tennis courts are the southern terminus of the paved Blue River Greenway Trail.
  • Shelter #1 entrance (N38o55'31" W94o34'7") is on Red Bridge Road east of the bridge and provides access to the picnic shelter, playground, cricket field, pickleball courts, and Old Red Bridge (1932). Old Red Bridge is pedestrian-only and used for love locks. The Potawatomi Trail of Death marker is on a bluff overlooking the Blue River near the playground. The paved Blue River Trail passes by these facilities and continues north under the new Red Bridge for one mile to Alex George Wetland (also a birding hotspot), then extending three more miles north to 95th Terrace.
  • Minor Park Swales entrance (N38o55'31" W94o34'34") is on Red Bridge Road west of the bridge and provides access to six ruts made by travelers on the Santa Fe Trail, Oregon Trail, and California Trail between 1821 and 1865. This site is on the National Register of Historic Places and is considered one of the best Santa Fe Trail ruts in Missouri. On the modern highway bridge east of the parking area are interpretive panels and displays representing individuals with ties to the three historic trails. A bicycle-pedestrian path which is separated from traffic by a concrete wall crosses the modern highway bridge.
  • Minor Park Golf Course entrance (N38o55'21" W94o35'0") is on Holmes Road and not accessible to birders unless they are also paying golf course users. The golf course area can be viewed by non-golfers from the shared use pedestrian-bicycle path along Red Bridge Road.
