Tips for Birding

Wildhorse Road is a short but paved country road south of King City and north of San Lucas; there is an exit on Highway 101. Basically the road has two parts: a west end (this Hotspot) -- through very boring-looking agricultural land -- and an east end (a Hotspot called Wildhorse Canyon) -- that ends in a dead-end in short-grass among barren hills for the last 3 miles of public road. Wildhorse Canyon has a lot of special short-grass prairie birds (and looks like you are birding in the 1950s).

Because birders drive from Highway 101 to bird in Wildhorse Canyon, this boring-looking ag land -- now mostly vineyards -- have been surveyed enough to understand that this is a good spot for certain migrant and wintering species that prefer open country. The best spot is the big turn where the pin for this Hotspot sits. There is an occasional farm or line of trees that act as windbreaks. It is often very windy here, and in the summer it is usually quite hot.

Birds of Interest

In spring migration, there are a flew records over the decades of Swainson's Hawk; watch for most regular raptors that include American Kestrel, Prairie Falcon (rare), and Northern Harrier.  In winter, Mountain Bluebird has occurred erratically from November to March.  In summer, rows of trees may have Western Kingbird, Western Bluebird, and Cassin's Kingbird (scarce).
