Charlie Allen-Tates Rd

Charlie Allen-Tates Rd

Tips for Birding

During the breeding season driving the road slowly and making periodic stops can be quite rewarding. Just under a kilometre west of CR 507 the road passes a large regenerating old field on the south side and is worth a stop. Brown Thrasher, Field Sparrow, Eastern Towhee and Golden-winged Warbler breed at this site. Around 500 m farther west the road passes through a conifer swamp with Blue-headed Vireo, Brown Creeper, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Winter Wren, several species of warblers and Purple Finch. Just under a half kilometer farther west Charlie Allen Rd. extends north to a gated farm. It’s a narrow, winding road through mixed forest with few places to stop or pull over, so it’s best to continue north to a clearing beside an extensive alder swamp. This is a good place pull over or turn around. Both Golden-winged Warbler and American Bittern breed here, as do many Alder Flycatchers. Return to the main road and turn right (west) and continue another kilometre on Tates Rd to Tates Bridge over the Miskwaa Ziibi. There is space for a single vehicle to pullover on either side of the bridge. Golden-winged and Blue-winged warblers, Canada Warbler and a variety of other floodplain alder thicket swamp species can be found here. Just under a half kilometre farther west the road ends at private laneways, providing a good place to turn around.

Birds of Interest

A good variety of species typical of shrubby old fields, mature deciduous and mixed forest and alder thicket swamp can usually be found, including Black-billed Cuckoo and, less commonly, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Red-shouldered Hawk, Yellow-throated Vireo, Golden-winged and Blue-winged warblers and their hybrids and Canada Warbler.
