Solon Woods State Nature Preserve

Solon Woods State Nature Preserve

About this Location

Solon Woods State Nature Preserve is a 127 acre preserve located at the end of Russell Drive in Solon. It is a quiet street and although there is only parking for two or three cars this is more than enough. The main trail starts at the end of the road and continues straight into the preserve. After a short while the trail turns left or right. Continue to the right for the main trail. At this point the trail is not as straight or well maintained though it is easy to follow until the end. In the spring the trail can be wet but usually there is a dry area to get around wet spots. Later in the year vegetation begins to encroach on the trail towards the end. After about .75 miles the main trail opens up into an unmowed area and it can be difficult to follow where it goes. You can continue to the right along the tree line a short way before the path cuts back into the woods. This section is the most overgrown and if you continue a bit the path will open back up and loop back to the main trail which you can follow back the way you came in. In all, taking this route and returning to the entrance is a little under 1.5 miles.

In the spring there are wetlands that dry up by summer. The forest is pretty healthy and there are many wildflowers in spring.
