This site is always worth a quick stop and scan, particularly in spring and fall. Viewing is from Yankee Line (CR 14). This is a busy road, so be sure to pull well off onto the shoulder. There is a small pulloff on the north side of the road. A spotting scope is pretty much essential for viewing birds at this location.
The quarry pond is used mostly by waterfowl, but from late summer through fall when water levels tend to be lower, the shoreline and particularly the shelving limestone at the southwest end of the quarry is used by migrant shorebirds. It is a pretty reliable location to find both yellowlegs and Dunlin in late fall.
The Yankee Line pond is a water-filled limestone quarry. The limestone extracted from this quarry in the late 1940s was used to construct the nearby James Gifford Causeway across Chemong Lake. This quarry pond is on private property and is surrounded by active cattle pasture; do not trespass for any reason.
