Tips for Birding

Parking Lot 2 (Visitor Parking) has edge habitat that is great during migration.

Peacock Pond is not very great for birding because the banks are all stone walls and the water quality is very poor. Recently there have been student led efforts to clean it up.

The best birding tends to be on the trails that go along the Rumford River next to the turf field behind Haas Athletic Center.

Birds of Interest

Fish Crows usually hang out on campus, often in groups of 5 or more. It is often possible to get all three Corvus species on one checklist because Common Ravens also nest in the area.

American Woodcock breed around Parking Lot 3 (Student and Visitor Parking) in the spring and can be heard displaying in the evening.

Red-breasted Nuthatches have shown up in numbers recently (Fall 2020). They are seen primarily in the woods around the turf field and are sometimes just as abundant as White-breasted Nuthatches.

About this Location

Wheaton College is a private liberal arts college in Norton. Wheaton was founded in 1834 as a female seminary. The trustees officially changed the name of the Wheaton Female Seminary to Wheaton College in 1912 after receiving a college charter from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It remained one of the oldest institutions of higher education for women in the United States until men began to be admitted in 1988.

Wheaton is often recognized for its beautiful campus and arboretum.

In 1929, a marsh was excavated and transformed into Peacock Pond, which, in its first years, was used for swimming, boating, and skating. A contest to name the pond resulted in “Peacock Pond” because the Chapel‘s weathervane is reflected on its surface. However, today the water quality is very poor and swimming is not recommended.

Wheaton Woods is on the southern part of campus and has lots of trails that go through them, but there is no map.
