Tips for Birding

This spot is open April through October, and is a great spot for shorebirds and passerines, as it has great mudflats at the eastern end and is the only riparian habitat on Cochiti Lake. Drive down to the boat ramp area and there will be a road on the left when you're almost at the bottom. You can take this all the way to the mudflats on the eastern end, and there are various pullouts and parking areas to access some of the riparian habitats.

About this Location

Closed for the 2023 season.

Tetilla Peak Recreation Area is located in Sandoval County, within the boundaries of the Pueblo de Cochiti Indian Reservation. The lake offers two public recreation areas: Cochiti on the west side of the lake and Tetilla Peak on the east side. Both sides offer spectacular scenic views of the water and surrounding mountains. The Cochiti Dam is one of the ten largest earth-fill dams in the United States, and also one of the largest in the world. The lake derives its name from the Indian Pueblo on the Cochiti Reservation.
