Bedford Reservation--Hawthorn Parkway

About this Location

There is a parking area on Hawthorn Parkway just west of Richmond Road. From here you can access the paved trail that continues through Bedford Reservation and continues to Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Just to the west of the parking area there is an option to follow the dirt Buckeye Trail that goes into the woods and follows Tinkers Creek. The trail takes you through some small wetlands, forest, and along Tinkers Creek which is actually more of a stream. Just before you reach the I480 bridge the trail reconnects to the paved trail along the road which can be used to make a loop and take you back to the parking area. This loop is a little under three miles.

There is also a parking area on the west end off of Hawthorn Parkway just before the road reaches Broadway Ave. There is a bathroom at this location. Also at this portion the Buckeye Trail is across the street on the south side. You can make a loop if you take the paved bike trail back where the Buckeye Trail crosses it just before going under the 480 bridge. This would be a walk of just over a mile. For a longer hike you could continue on the Buckeye Trail to the east end then take the bike trail back for a total route of 3.5 miles or so.

If you drive about a quarter mile north on Richmond Road, Hawthorn Parkway continues to the east and connects to more Cleveland Metroparks property and the paved trail continues along with more trails in the other direction as well eventually connecting to South Chagrin Reservation.

About Bedford Reservation

See all hotspots at Bedford Reservation

Located in Bedford, Bedford Heights, Oakwood, Valley View, and Walton Hills, Bedford Reservation gives the appearance of a continuous forest of large trees and challenging terrain, which discouraged early logging operations.

The reservation offers trails and picnic areas and includes Shawnee Hills Golf Course as one of its attractions. Flowing through Bedford Reservation is Tinkers Creek, named for a member of Moses Cleveland’s surveying party. The stream drops a dramatic 220 feet for two miles and has cut a steep, walled gorge. The gorge, declared a National Natural Landmark, is a unique area with numerous tree, shrub, and flower species.

The Tinkers Creek Gorge Scenic Overlook on Gorge Parkway offers a spectacular vista, particularly in the fall. Tinkers Creek Gorge Overlook is wheelchair accessible.
