About this Location

The Tierra Amarilla Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The district includes 107 contributing buildings, most of which are residential. The oldest building in the district is the Tierra Amarilla Schoolhouse, built in 1880. Other notable buildings include the Tierra Amarilla Courthouse, which was built in 1917 and was the site of the Tierra Amarilla Courthouse Raid in 1967.

The Tierra Amarilla Historic District is a well-preserved example of a late 19th-century Hispanic village. The buildings in the district are mostly made of adobe and reflect the Spanish colonial architectural style. The community is also home to a number of cultural resources, including the Tierra Amarilla Land Grant Museum, which tells the story of the Tierra Amarilla land grant.
