Drive the residential streets in this area slowly, keeping an eye open for bird and hummingbird feeders (but also being cautious about turning binoculars directly onto homes/windows).
When you get to the end of Schulenberg Lane, the road will be come dirt. Be careful after any rains about getting stuck.
After a left turn in the entrance road, you will find Avery rough-in-appearance parking area. The parking area is surrounded by a lot pipe fence typical of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers installations.
Look for a place to cross over the fence onto a rather rough and not super well maintained path that leads to the lake.
From this location, you will mostly be looking northward so morning or afternoon sun should not be a problem for birding.
A scope will be vital for seeing birds on the lake!!
Winter waterfowl. Bald Eagle. Shorebirds and other waders. Herons and egrets.
This is an U.S. Army Corps of Engineers access point to Lake Somerville
