About this Location

This elevated ridge that the 4 mile road transverses is probably the most southern US breeding grounds for both Blackburnian and Chestnut-sided Warblers. Increasingly more residences are being built along the road but parts of the road also go along state forest land. The road ends at Eagles Rest Park on Mount Oglethorpe which was set aside as a preserve by a widower in honor of his late naturalist wife. Near the end of the road close to where the road enters the park is a marker for an old start for the Appalachian trail. Eagles Rest Park is also listed as a hotspot and has several short hiking trails. Black Bear are often encountered along the road. Some of the residents have dogs that may not be leashed which may be encountered in the areas where there are houses. A slow drive along the entire road in Spring can be a wonderful birding by ear experience with stops about midway on the left at the pullout parking area at Tobbaco Pouch (State forest permit needed for parking) and Eagles Rest Park (no permit needed).
