Gate 33 is one of the access points to the Wachusett Reservoir located on Metropolitan Road (MA-110), and offers a view of the reservoir and the surrounding hills. It is a popular spot for hiking, fishing, boating, and wildlife watching. Gate 33 is open year-round, but visitors must follow the rules and regulations posted at the entrance. The reservoir is protected by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Wachusett Reservoir, along with the Quabbin Reservoir and Ware River, is an unfiltered source of high-quality water for the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority water supply system. The 65-billion-gallon reservoir covers 108 square miles with 37 miles of shoreline. Recreational activities are regulated and limited to protect 3 million people’s drinking water.
