Notable Trails

Highfield Road Railroad Bed is a historic site in Newbury, Massachusetts. It was part of the Eastern Railroad, which operated from 1836 to 1884. The railroad bed is a remnant of the original route that connected Boston and Portland, Maine. The site consists of a raised embankment, about 20 feet wide and 600 feet long, that crosses Highfield Road at a diagonal angle. The railroad bed is one of the few surviving sections of the Eastern Railroad that has not been paved over or developed. It is a testament to the engineering and transportation history of the region.

The Clipper City Rail Trail is north of this stretch of railroad bed and the Byfield and Boxford Rail Trail is south of this section.
