Portales, New Mexico 88130
Official WebsiteThe elms and other trees attract woodpeckers, which was the motivation for establishing the hotspot in November 2022. As a new hotspot, eBird species-frequency bar charts will be sparsely populated. Birders should see doves here throughout the year, along with European Starling, Great-tailed Grackle, American Robin, Northern Mockingbird, House Sparrow, and House Finch. Seasonally, White-crowned Sparrow, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Blue Jay, Western Kingbird, Say’s Phoebe, and Western Wood-Pewee are likely.
The 11-acre square parcel bounded by Abilene Avenue, Chicago Avenue, 7th Street, and 9th Street, contains Parks Department buildings, the city swimming pool, a baseball diamond, and in its southern quadrant a turfed area with many tall elms. Evergreens line the park side of Abilene Avenue, running northwest-southeast, and various types of trees are found in the yards of surrounding homes. Parking is available along 9th Street, as well as off 7th Street between the Parks Department buildings and the swimming pool.
