About this Location

Important Bird Area.
A large complex (nearly 1,000 acres) of wetlands and uplands situated on the very west edge of the City of Spirit Lake.
From junction of US Highway 71 and Iowa Highway 9, on the west side of the City of Spirit Lake, drive slightly less than 1 mi. west on Hwy. 9, then make sharp right turn onto 15th street. Travel 1/4 mi. east until reaching entrance sign and road to Jemmerson Slough on north side of 15th Street. This is quickest and easiest access, but area may also be access from 145th/140th Street on north side of wetland complex.
Numerous natural, restored and enhanced wetland scattered across a landscape of rolling glacial moraine. Uplands are a mix of tame and restored prairie grasslands, crop fields, old farmstead windbreaks and a stand of overgrown oak savanna. Another top area for nesting and migrating waterfowl and other waterbirds of all varieties, plus an array of grassland birds in most of the uplands. Periodically has held nesting Black-crowned Night Herons, Black Terns, Forsters' terns and even possibly nesting White-faced Ibis in the 1980s
