Peterborough--Harper Park

Peterborough--Harper Park

Tips for Birding

Birding Harper Park at any time is worthwhile but is likely to be more productive during spring and fall migration.

Birds of Interest

A good variety of passerine species can be observed both during the breeding season and during spring and fall migration.

About this Location

Harper Park is a 60 ha undeveloped park owned by the City of Peterborough. It lies with the larger 265 ha Harper Creek Subwatershed, one of the largest natural areas within the city limits. The area is a mosaic of disturbed open fields, mixed swamp, upland deciduous forest and shrub thicket swamp. A groundwater-fed coldwater stream drains the area. Access from Ramblewood Dr. through Bridlewood Park in the northwest or from Harper Rd. in the south. There is streetside parking on both Ramblewood Dr. and on the gravel, road shoulders on either side of Harper Rd.

Notable Trails

There is a short (~600 m) unofficial loop trail leading north from the Harper Rd. entrance. The trail is neither marked nor maintained and is apparent only through its repeated used by hikers.
