Richard E. Genser Starr Pass Trailhead

Richard E. Genser Starr Pass Trailhead

Tips for Birding

The Rock Wren Trail departs from the upper end of the large parking lot. It connects to multiple other well marked trails. The habitat is fairly uniform so you can keep a single checklist (preferably less than 5 miles long) or divide your route up into multiple shorter segments so that the birds you observe are more accurately matched to where you found them.

Birds of Interest

Birds typical of Sonoran desert: Cactus Wren, Black-throated Sparrow, Canyon Towhee and sparse Gilded Flickers.

About this Location

The Genser Starr Pass Trailhead is the access point for the extensive trail system in the area. The trailhead is open from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Dogs are not allowed. It is popular with hikers and cyclists. Google Maps shows two different locations with this name and may give directions to the "wrong" one in a non-public area. Follow signs on Starr Pass Blvd instead. The miles of trails are in good condition and have mostly gradual gradients. The habitat is beautiful Sonoran Desert uplands. At every official trail intersection there is a trail map sign. (April 2024)
