Rice Lake--Holiday Pines Park

Rice Lake--Holiday Pines Park

Tips for Birding

This is primarily a winter and spring waterfowl vantage. A spotting scope is pretty much essential at this location.

Birds of Interest

Twenty-one species of waterfowl have been observed here. Common Goldeneye, Common Merganser, Ring-necked Duck and Lesser Scaup are the most common species of diving ducks. Dabbling duck species tend to congregate in the marshy channels at the mouth of the Ouse River with Mallard being by far the most abundant species. Both Trumpeter and Mute swans can be seen throughout the winter and into early spring.

About this Location

The Holiday Pines Park hotspot is located at the south end of Asphodel 2nd Line and covers all visible waters of the Trent River/Rice Lake and the immediate vicinity of the parking area. Given its elevated location it affords relatively unobstructed views to the southeast and east down the Trent River. The current is strong along this stretch of river such that in all but the coldest winters at least some sections remain ice-free. Immediately to the east below the overlook is the mouth of the Ouse River, which also may remain open. The best place to park is at the turnaround at the south end of the 2nd Line but be sure not to block access to the Canada Post community mailbox. South Oak Lane continues west from the 2nd Line into Holiday Pines Park. Beyond the entrance gate is private property, so do not enter without permission.
