I-25 Onava Exit Playa

I-25 Onava Exit Playa

Las Vegas, New Mexico 87701

Tips for Birding

The playa is located primarily on the north side of I-25, north of the beginning of the Exit 356 off-ramp as you’re heading south. The edges of the playa do extend south of the interstate, but water there is currently unlikely. If coming from the south, you can cross under the highway. It is possible to park near a gate between the fence and where a frontage road extends south to the Las Vegas airport exit (352). From that parking area, you may walk north between the fence and the off-ramp, back to near where the off-ramp leaves the highway, for a better view of the playa.

About this Location

The playa is surrounded by arid high-plains grassland, mostly, it seems, Blue gramma, Side-oats gramma, and Buffalo grass, undisturbed by any trees or bushes. Given the long southwestern drought, you are extremely unlikely to see more than a few grassland bird species here, except for during the wettest parts of the year when some water may fill a small fraction of the playa. As of mid-2023, none of the last 50 checklists, dating back to mid-2016, have shown a double-digit species count;  without limiting eBird species-frequency bar chart data to that since mid-2016, the charts will not reflect what you will see now.
