Notable Trails

Explore 4 miles of trails at Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary, including a 1 mile universally accessible trail. Trails traverse woodlands, meadows, ponds, salt marsh, and along shorelines. Our trails are wide and well maintained, even the smallest feet or biggest stroller can be accommodated.

Sassafras (Yellow) to Shad Trail
0.5 miles
For a short jaunt, take the Sassafras (Yellow) Trail to the Shad Trail. This combination will take you along a footbridge over Turtle Pond, where in the spring, summer, and fall you might be lucky enough to see frogs, turtles, dragonflies, damselflies, and birds. Bear left and take the Shad Trail to the shore of Major’s Cove on Sengekontacket Pond. Get back to the Nature Center by walking the shoreline and returning on the Beach Trail or reconnecting with the Sassafras (Yellow) Trail.

Marsh (Red) Trail
0.7 miles
Dramatic views of State Beach and beyond are the lure of the Marsh (Red) Trail. Relish the tranquility just a short distance from the hectic summer beach. The Marsh (Red) Trail shows off pristine salt marsh and takes you through a peaceful, shaded grove of pitch pine trees. The Sassafras (Yellow) Trail is the connecting trail to return to the Nature Center.

Jessica Hancock Memorial (Green) Trail
0.5 miles
The Jessica Hancock Memorial (Green) Trail’s main attractions are the freshwater bog, sandplain grassland, and a view of the osprey pole. On spring afternoons, the bog is alive with the chorus of “pinkletink” frogs looking for mates. In the spring and summer, you can hear and perhaps see red-winged blackbirds on the cattails. A smaller jog of this trail invites you to walk beneath “beetlebung” trees, notable for their brilliant fall colors and their historic use as “beetle” mallets and “bung” stoppers for whale oil barrels.

Old Farm Road (Blue)
0.5 miles
The widest trail provides easy access for strollers and large groups to walk side by side. Ending at Sengekonatcket Pond, this trail offers a bench to take in the scenic pond view. You can walk the same route or take a side trail back to the Nature Center.

For those who want it all!
Combine the trails to walk the perimeter of the sanctuary. Take in the shoreline, woodlands, marsh, and everything Felix Neck has to offer. Follow the Sassafras (Yellow) Trail to the Shad Trail, walk around the shoreline, come back inland via the Old Farm Road (Blue), and then take the Marsh (Red) Trail back to the Nature Center.
