Tips for Birding

This hotspot is, if not unique for Chaves County, unusual in being surrounded by actively cropped lands bordering a streambed that usually has flowing water. Unfortunately, there is no public access, and the hotspot can only be publicly birded from a rural but busy road. The eBird hotspot map pin is located in a farm field on the east side of Red Bridge Road, just north of the Hondo River bridge. Though there is a flat, narrow pullout off the pavement, south of a gate to the farm field, that field is private property, with public entry prohibited. In addition, fencing abuts the bridge both east and west, preventing access to the river on both sides.

North Red Bridge Road, in combination with Pine Lodge Road, serves as the unofficial truck route to bypass Roswell on its northeast between Highways 380 and 285. There is no shoulder nor center stripe, yet the route is well-traveled by semis, so gawking from your vehicle or making any sudden stops can be hazardous.

Due to the similarity of vegetation and land use between 19th Street a half mile north of the bridge and a half mile south of the bridge, observations made throughout this one-mile stretch of North Red Bridge Road can appropriately be listed for the hotspot. Based on the hotspot name and on recorded lists, it does not seem that the hotspot extends north to the Berrendo Creek “fishing hole” (officially, New Mexico Game and Fish Open Gate private property 162) south of the Zinnia Road intersection on the west side of North Red Bridge Road. Birders will find parking at the fishing area easier than at either of the Red Bridge Road hotspots and probably observe a wider variety of species.

The first lists for the Red Bridge Road Ag Fields hotspot were reported in 2022, so eBird species-frequency bar charts are based on sparse data. Birders are most likely to see doves, blackbirds, grackles, and European Starlings. Some observations here may have earlier been reported for the similarly-named N. Red Bridge Road hotspot, which has much a different vegetation and land-use pattern.
